Pet & Child Safety with Houseplants

If you have pets or small children, removing toxic plants is the safest choice. Many common houseplants, like Philodendron, Pothos, and Peace Lily, can cause serious reactions if ingested.

However, if you prefer to keep toxic plants, here are ways to reduce the risk:

  • Place Out of Reach: Keep toxic plants in areas that are inaccessible to curious hands and paws. Keep in mind, however, that hanging baskets or high spots can still be risky, as fallen leaves might drop within reach of pets or small children.
  • Use a Greenhouse Cabinet or Terrarium: An IKEA greenhouse cabinet or sealed terrarium is an ideal way to display plants while keeping them safely enclosed. This not only protects pets and kids but also helps maintain humidity-loving plants.
  • Swap with Plant Enthusiasts: Consider trading toxic plants with others for pet- and child-safe alternatives. It’s a great way to find new plants and build your collection responsibly.
